The cross in the background and a granite plaque listing the names of 163 individuals were erected in 2006 as a tribute to the lives lost in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Each year on August 29, the anniversary of the storm, a remembrance ceremony is held at the memorial.
