Detailed Description
A: The eight United States cities used in the study, with their corresponding high-resolution land cover data inlaid. The U.S. map displays the maximum vapor pressure deficit (VPD, a metric of atmospheric aridity) in the month of August. The VPD data are modeled 30-year normals (PRISM Group, 2007). B: Ranked placement of all U.S. cities with populations above 100,000 vs. mean August VPD, to display the range of the aridity gradient captured by the eight study cities. C: One study city (Portland) used as an example to display higher detail of the high-resolution land cover data, as well as the deployment of iButton sensors, stratified across a gradient of urban vegetation (displayed as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, NDVI).
