USGS scientist at The Kink, North Fork Fortymile River, Alaska

Detailed Description

A USGS scientist standing on the pre-1900 riverbed that is now the rim of the bedrock canyon at The Kink on North Fork Fortymile River. The Kink resulted from human mining activity that diverted the river in 1900. The study of this canyon provides rare insight on the fundamental yet seldom seen process of bedrock gorge formation and highlights long-lived impacts of brief human activity on the landscape. The study is available in Geology at: https://doi.org/10.1130/G49479.1
