Velvet Tooth Mushroom

Detailed Description

Hydnellum spongiosipes, the velvet tooth. It has small spines covering its underside, from which the mushroom emits its spores. They are a very understudied group of mushrooms but reportedly are excellent for dyeing fabric.

This specimen was found on the Blue Square Trail at the Long Ridge Conservation Area, Sullivan, Missouri. This image is part of the article Trailheads: Portals to the Fungal Dimension.
