Zabriskie Point

Detailed Description

This view looking south from Zabriskie Point includes the yellowish badlands of the Furnace Creek Formation. The Furnace Creek Formation consists of basin-filling sediments deposited during the early Pliocene Epoch, about 3-5 million years ago. In the distance, peaks in the northern end of the Black Mountains consist mostly of massive volcanic rock exposures (pyroclastic flows, ash beds, and volcanic intrusions) of the Artist Drive Formation (Hunt and Mabey, 1966).
