H1 East Transect – 2014

Permanent Site: H1 East Transect; Depth: 5.5 Meters (Feet 17.8); Distance from river mouth: 2.4 Kilometers (1.5 Miles) east; Pre/Post Dam Removal: 3 years post-dam removal; Lat/Long: 48.1479177,-123.53472865; Site Description: This is a shallow site and one of the farthest removed from the effects of the sediment plume outside of the control sites. Substrate is still mainly gravel with some sand and cobble. This video includes footage from surveys conducted both on July 23 and August 19. During the first survey the majority of the seaweeds seen were two brown seaweeds, mainly the perennial seaweed Pterygophora californica (0:05 seconds) and Saccharina spp. (0:15 seconds). Red seaweed was present but growth was small. However, on the August 19 survey (0:32 seconds), red seaweed growth was profuse (0:57 seconds) and other small brown seaweeds were now growing. The seaweed Alaria marginata (seconds) increased from 2 to 17 plants. Bull kelp Nereocystis luetkeana (1:10, 2:30 seconds) was present. The three-ribbed kelp Cymathere triplicata, that was abundant in August the previous year, was absent. Horse clams (Tresus capax) were still abundant. Juvenile Dungeness crabs (Metacarcinus magister) are seen at 0:21, 0:26 and 0:29 seconds.
