Hi, my name is Nick Stasulis and I am a hydrologic technician with the Maine Office of the New England Water Science Center. In this video, we will demonstrate how to collect a starting edge as part of a midsection ADCP measurement in TRDI SxS Pro.

Once the unit is configured and the pre-measurement tests complete, you are ready to begin data collection. Start the measurement by pressing F6 or clicking the icon here. You do not need to be pinging to start, but if you are, that’s fine too.

A dialog box appears that asks for several pieces of information. First, select the correct starting edge. Then, enter the distance from initial point. This is the location of the ADCP on the tagline, bridge markings or other markings. In this case, we will say the edge was at the 8 ft marker of the tagline. If the edge was triangular, or sloping, you could simply click ok and move to the next station. If the edge is vertical or near-vertical, however, you could enter the depth of the water at the edge, and a velocity correction factor, which is applied to the velocity at the next station you collect data. If this is the case, be sure to estimate the velocity at the edge compared to the velocity at the location you plan to collect your first station and apply the appropriate correction factor.

Once this information is complete, click ok. If you are not pinging already, the software will start the unit pinging at this time.
