Speaker:  Dr. Dana Kolpin, Research Hydrologist, Central Midwest Water Science Center

In the United States, there are over 922 million acres of land farmed (e.g., corn, soybeans, wheat, and cotton) on which over 1 billion pounds of pesticides are used annually. In addition, over 2.1 billion livestock (e.g., poultry, swine, cattle) are raised generating 1.1 billion tons of manure annually. The U.S. Geological Survey Ecosystem Mission Area’s Food Resources Lifecycle Integrated Science Team (Food IST) is uniquely qualified to address potential environmental exposures and corresponding potential effects due to these and other related activities associated with agricultural (e.g., the growing, raising, processing, and manufacturing of plant and animal products). This talk will provide examples of research being conducted by the Food IST to better understand contaminant exposures and corresponding effects related to agricultural activities across the United States.
