The USGS National Digital Trails project is dedicated to aggregating official trail data nationwide and ensuring it is freely accessible, usable, and shareable by everyone without restrictions. Our team has been manually updating state trail data every 3–5 years. To enable annual updates, we developed the Trail Data Portal, a web-based application that streamlines submissions from State data managers. The Portal allows managers to submit public domain trail datasets for potential inclusion in our nationwide dataset and provides greater control over the submission process.
We have been working on updating USGS trail data for Federal and State trail data sources. Now we are also considering trail data from local and regional authoritative sources in States where we do not have State-wide aggregated trail data. You can use USGS Trails Explorer to view the latest USGS trail data. The trail data is displayed in red (terra trails), purple (snow trails) or blue (water trails) lines with National Trails shown with a thicker symbol. Take a look at what we have! If you don’t see your agency’s data in the USGS Trails Explorer, please use Trail Data Portal to submit your data or contact trails@usgs.gov to let us know.
If you have a new or updated trail data to submit, please use the Trail Data Portal. This approach enhances our ability to track and update submissions over time. The Portal also lets you specify metadata and schema mapping details.
With millions of USGS topographic maps downloaded monthly via US Topo map downloader and topoBuilder, including your data helps keep our products and services current.
