CHORUS

The U.S. Geological Survey and CHORUS, a not-for-profit organization, signed an agreement in 2015 to support increasing public access to publications resulting from research funded by USGS. USGS publications are indexed in the USGS Publications Warehouse, which uses industry publishing standards and unique identifiers that are interoperable with the CHORUS framework, and facilitates reporting of publicly accessible USGS-authored and -funded publications through the USGS CHORUS Dashboard.

Altmetric

The USGS Publications Warehouse added Altmetric badges to citation pages in 2017. Altmetric provides an online attention score for individual publications from online sources such as social media, news articles, Wikipedia citations, and more. Altmetric scores for information products in the Publications Warehouse are calculated by tracking references to the CrossRef DOIs assigned to USGS-authored publications. Publications that have an Altmetric score will display an Altmetric "donut" on their citation page. Access the Altmetric Explorer dashboard for USGS publications here: https://www.altmetric.com/explorer.

Web of Science and Scopus

USGS scientists have access to the Web of Science and Scopus databases. Available through the USGS Library’s subscription, Web of Science and Scopus offer citation analyses and various bibliographic features. Please see the online guide from the USGS Library on measuring impacts of published citations, and contact the Library for assistance using these resources.

Publications Warehouse API and Google Scholar

The Publications Warehouse team worked with Google to index USGS publications in Google and Google Scholar in 2015. Google Scholar searchers may view how often publications are cited using the Google Scholar Cited by feature.

The USGS Publications Warehouse API has increased access to USGS research by facilitating the indexing of the Publications Warehouse by other sources. As a result of these efforts, the total usage of the Publications Warehouse has increased from 880K visitors in 2014 to over 1,900,000 visitors in FY19. In the same timeframe, the available content has increased from 130,000 to over 160,000 citations, with over 87% of the USGS numbered series reports now available online in full-text. By increasing access, awareness, and available content, USGS-authored and -funded publications are reaching an expanding global audience.
