Announcing the 2021 Reducing Risk Awardees

March 19, 2021

Each year, as part of implementing the USGS Risk Plan, the Natural Hazards Mission Area issues a bureau-wide request for proposals (RFP) to award seed funding to projects that focus on innovative risk research and applications.

A Fire burns along the ground in a ponderosa pine forest in New Mexico
Prescribed fires, such as this one, are used by land managers to restore ponderosa pine forests to more resilient conditions. USGS is fortunate to be able to occasionally participate in such burns because we are co-located with land managers. (Public domain.)

The goal of this RFP is to identify and support projects that advance different elements of the Plan (e.g., advancing and creating partnerships, product evaluation/user research and testing, workshops, product visualization, and tool development). This year, priority was given to proposals that addressed compound events. New this year was an evaluation criterion on diversity and equity to encourage projects to consider how they contribute to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and in USGS risk research and applications.

We are pleased to announce the recipients of this year’s funding
