In 2019, Earth MRI provided $920,000 in grants to state geological surveys for a variety of critical minerals data preservation activities through the USGS National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program (NGGDPP). These projects will contribute to our understanding of the Nation’s known and potential endowment of critical minerals.
Earth MRI – Critical Minerals Data Preservation Activities
States have many different types of information related to critical minerals which are often stored in difficult to use formats. Sources of information include published and unpublished reports, digital and hardcopy maps, physical samples, current and prospective extraction data and other information related to critical minerals. Results of the preservation activities are provided in reports to the NGGDPP and Earth MRI programs as well as registered in the National Digital Catalog, a portal for all preservation activities. All state
grants require a minimum 1:1 match of state dollars. The grant program also supports state’s participation in 2 critical minerals
workshops held in September and October of 2019.
