The USGS Nevada Water Science Center (NVWSC) would like to bring to your attention to a Hydrologist vacancy currently advertised on USA jobs (federal employee applicants, non-federal applicants). This is a permanent mid-career (GS-11) to senior hydrologist (GS-12) position in the NVWSC’s Carson City office and vacancy expires October 26, 2018 (or with 50 applications).

The position we are looking to fill is for a strong groundwater hydrologist with exceptional skills with aquifer testing and analysis, groundwater/surface water interactions, with modeling experience/expertise a plus. The vacancy is open to all federal employees and all US citizens so please feel free to forward to anyone you think would be qualified and interested.

The NVWSC has a diverse and innovative water science program on the leading edge of understanding impacts of groundwater withdrawals on water resources, water rights, environmental water requirements, sensitive habitats, and endangered species. If you want to be involved with cutting edge hydrologic and multidisciplinary science that is leading Western water policy to recognize groundwater and surface water as a single resource and development of 'true' conjunctive management, then this is where you want to be.

The job itself and the work we are doing should be enough to attract a wide range of exceptional candidates, but if that is not enough; you would be living in or near Carson City, the State Capitol of Nevada, and one of the best kept secrets in the nation (shhh, please don't tell anyone else). Carson City is uniquely located in the shadow of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Here you will enjoy the four seasons, with relatively mild winters offered by the protection of the Mountains which intercept the brunt of the storms. Because of this, the Sierra Nevada often have frequent record setting snow packs. If you are into winter sports, we have about a dozen ski-resorts within an hours drive including the extremely popular multi-resort season pass offered to locals at a very reasonable rate. If skiing and riding at the resorts is not your thing, you can enjoy the snow by snowshoe, back country ski, or snow mobile. And although we are technically on the edge of the desert, you will be surprised how mild our summers are with summer peak temperatures mostly in the mid 90's (and with no humidity!). Within a few minutes drive of Carson City you can find instant relief from the few hot days enjoying the tall cool mountains and endless trail networks including the famed Tahoe Rim and Pacific Crest Trails, or spend your leisure swimming, boating or fishing in Lake Tahoe.  If you are into more solitude, exploring, or hunting and fishing, we are fortuitously located on the edge of the Great Basin with endless opportunities to enjoy your wide-open public lands (Nevada is 85% public land!).

But if your thing is not the outdoors, we still have something for you. We are located within 30 minutes of Reno, the biggest little city in the world, with an abundance of shopping and other large city amenities and entertainment including Triple-A baseball (go Reno Aces!). Or if your idea of a getaway is to head into the urban jungles, well we are just over the hill from Sacramento, the bay area and San Francisco. Or maybe your thing is touring National Parks. Within just a few hours we have Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Joshua Tree, Death Valley and Great Basin National parks, or within a days drive, Yellowstone and all of the national parks in Utah.

Lest we forget I need not remind you that this is Nevada and we are somewhat famous for our non-traditional recreational activities as well. Please consider this opportunity and submit your application today or pass along to any qualified applicants you may know.
