Jan. 30, 2019 - NGGDPP Webinar - Rescue of Valuable Geologic Collections in North Carolina

Collection rescue and preservation funded by a grant awarded to the North Carolina Geological Survey by the USGS National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program

North Carolina Geological Survey Cary Annex
Poor storage conditions in the North Carolina Geological Survey Cary Annex facility. Geological samples were rescued and relocated using grant funding provided by the USGS National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program.

In 2017-2018, the North Carolina Geological Survey rescued a valuable collection of geologic cores, which include legacy mineral resource evaluation and Continental Shelf samples. The facility in which the samples were stored became dilapidated; large holes in the roof permitted rain water and snow melt to penetrate the facility and damage the collections. A NGGDPP grant was used to rescue, relocate, and preserve the valuable materials for public access and research. During the webinar, Dr. Katheleen Farrell, geologist with the North Carolina Geological Survey, will present project outcomes.
