USGS HVO Press Release — Dr. Mark Scheafer, USGS Interim Director

October 31, 1997

Dr. Mark Schaefer, Interim Director of the USGS and Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Water and Science, will meet and address USGS personnel on Tuesday, November 4 at 4:00 p.m. in the Ohia Room of KMC.

The news media are invited to attend and learn about the role of the U.S. Geological Survey in Hawai‘i. In addition to the traditional missions of monitoring the water supply, providing topographic maps, and mitigating geologic hazards, the USGS is now involved with biological studies of the delicate Hawaiian ecology.

Daily updates about ongoing eruptions, recent images and videos of summit and East Rift Zone volcanic activity, maps, and data about recent earthquakes in Hawaii are posted on the HVO website at https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/observatories/hvo
