A new eruption at Kīlauea's summit began at approximately 3:20 p.m. HST on September 29, 2021. Lava activity is currently confined within Halema‘uma‘u crater, in the closed area of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.

HVO scientists collect detailed data to assess hazards and understand how the eruption is evolving at Kīlauea's summit, all of which are shared with the National Park Service and emergency managers. Access to this hazardous area is by permission from, and in coordination with, Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.

Lava continues to eruption from a vent on the western wall of Halema‘uma‘u crater and flow into the lava lake. The active area of the lava lake remains similar in size to the previous week. In the foreground, a down-dropped block containing a segment of the old Crater Rim Drive can be seen. The southeast flank of Mauna Loa is in the background. USGS photo taken by B. Orange lava erupting from a lava pond within a dark spatter cone
Lava erupts through a perched lava pond in the active western vent of Halema‘uma‘u crater, and supplies lava to the lava lake. Spatter bursts like the one seen here disrupt the pond surface nearly continuously and occasionally throw lava outside the vent, building up the cone. This burst is approximately 5 meters (16 feet) tall. USGS photo taken by B. Carr on November 23, 2021.
