All of that near real‑time monitoring data is available to anyone curious enough to look, and it takes just a few clicks. From keiki to kūpuna, enthusiasts to experts, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory provides this information so our community can stay informed about Hawaii’s volcanoes.

Behind every earthquake map, GPS point, tilt plot, gas measurement, and webcam view is a network of instruments across the landscape recording data around the clock. Seismometers, GPS receivers, tiltmeters, gas sensors, and cameras all work together to give us a full picture of volcanic activity.

And holding that entire system together is a team of field engineers, electronics specialists, and information technology or IT staff. They hike across rugged lava flows, dense rainforest, and glassy new volcanic deposits to install, repair, and maintain the stations that keep those data streams flowing. Every storm, eruption, and hardware failure sends them back into the field to make sure scientists—and the public—aren’t left in the dark.

So, the next time you check on an eruption or hear an update from a scientist, remember the team of people who make that information possible. Their work ensures that scientists can interpret the physical processes driving Hawaii’s volcanic activity—and that our community stays informed with reliable, real‑time information.
