This issue of Earthquakes & Volcanoes tells the story of a pair of exceptional earthquakes, which struck southern California on June 28, 1992 - a magnitude 7.6 earthquake near Landers and a magnitude 6.7 aftershock near Big Bear Lake. The mainshock occurred at approximately 5:00 a.m. local time, and the aftershock - the strongest of a prolonged, prolific series - followed 3 hrs later.
