Summary of hydrologic and physical properties of rock and soil materials, as analyzed by the hydrologic laboratory of the U.S. Geological Survey, 1948-60

January 1, 1966

The Hydrologic Laboratory was established in 1948 to serve as the central laboratory for the Ground Water Branch, Water Resources Division, of the U.S. Geological Survey. During the period it has been in existence, numerous samples of rock and soil materials have been analyzed. Analysis data on samples from 42 states and for the period 1948 through 1960 are summarized.

The data are presented in a form to allow an easy comparison of the physical and hydrologic properties of many sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rock and soil materials. Sedimentary rocks, the principal water-bearing rocks, are discussed in more detail.
