Your work will advance strategic communications to support society's effective adaptation to changing landscapes through: more efficient water resource allocation, enhanced agricultural productivity, more productive exploration of natural resources, and improved understanding of wildland fire dynamics, to name just a few.  USGS-managed land imaging data provide a landscape-level view of land surface and coastal processes, both natural and human-induced. And the data's long time series helps us to better understand the scope, nature, and speed of changes to the natural environment.

USGS is the world leader in land imaging systems, and we are eager to share their benefits more broadly with public sector, private sector, and international community.  Come join us in this effort!

Project Hypothesis or Objectives:

Intern will be responsible for supporting the development and implementation of a Strategic Communications Plan for the USGS Land Remote Sensing (LRS) Program, to include outreach to key stakeholder communities. The Plan will help to advance knowledge and utilization of land-imaging data available from USGS, and support continuity of these land imaging observations for societal benefit.

Duration: Up to 12 months

Expected Outcome:

The project will better enable USGS to communicate the value and impact of land-imaging observations, and support greater utilization of land-imaging data by traditional and non-traditional users.  The intern will have an enjoyable, educational, and challenging work experience which will help continue and expand the beneficial use of land imaging data in the United States and abroad.

Special skills/training Required:

Ongoing graduate-level academic coursework in the social or physical sciences; strong writing and communications skills; strong computer skills; good analytical skills.  Must be available for occasional local travel; must be a licensed driver, as operation of Government vehicles may be required for local travel and event participation.

Duties/Responsibilities:

The intern will support the Land Remote Sensing Program's Branch Chief for Outreach and Collaboration.  S/he will help craft and implement a Strategic Communications Plan for the Program to use internally and externally to sustain the Nation's land-imaging capabilities. The intern will meet with internal and external stakeholders to convey the benefits of land imaging systems, and provide follow up to maintain and enhance their dialogue with the Program.  S/he will have the opportunity to work at USGS facilities and enhance his/her knowledge of land imaging satellite policy and objectives. S/he will be exposed to new data sources, develop new communications and analytical skills, and work collaboratively with a team of talented USGS scientific and technical colleagues.
