Carolyn Cosgrove
Carolyn Cosgrove is a Staff Scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Office of Science Quality and Integrity (OSQI).
Dr. Cosgrove is leading the Rapid Response Education Outreach for Natural Hazard Events Pilot, an initiative to develop post-event educational resources that connect USGS science with educators and students through timely, evidence-based learning materials following significant natural hazard events. She also serves as a Staff Scientist supporting the USGS Research Grade Evaluation (RGE) process.
Previously, within OSQI, Dr. Cosgrove contributed to bureau-wide initiatives in science quality and scientific integrity and served on the USGS Laboratory Advisory Board, where she co-led the Animal Welfare Working Group.
Prior to joining USGS, Dr. Cosgrove served with the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a Veterinary Medical Officer in the Federal Select Agent Program and as a Supervisory Public Health Veterinarian with the Food Safety and Inspection Service. She has more than 11 years of federal inspection experience as a Veterinary Medical Officer, with expertise in public health, laboratory oversight, biosafety, biorisk management, incident response, animal welfare, leadership, supervision, and scientific quality.
Dr. Cosgrove earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Master of Science in Biology from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Virginia–Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia. Her professional interests include advancing science quality, improving public understanding of science, and developing practical tools that help translate complex scientific information into resources that support education, preparedness, and informed decision-making.
