Terrence Mcglynn

I am an AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow in the Office of Risk and Resilience. I support the Hazard Ready Nation program in the Natural Hazards Mission Area, focusing on partnership development, interagency coordination, and community building.

I am applying two decades of experience in academic and federal science to support the Hazard Ready Nation program. I served as Director of the Desert Studies Center in a partnership with National Park Service and the California State University system, operating a 1,280 acre field station located in Mojave National Preserve, serving more than 50 institutions and organizations annually. Trained in the ecology, behavior, and evolution of invasive species, as faculty my research program turned towards the integrative biology of ants and the ecology of tropical rainforests and the thermal biology near-infrared reflectance in animals. My long-term research program in Costa Rica provided training to hundreds of undergraduates, producing more than 75 peer-reviewed publications under the support of 10 awards from the National Science Foundation. I wrote the Chicago Guide to College Science Teaching (2020), which emphasizes an equitable and kind approach to undergraduate instruction.  to foster equity and kindness in university teaching. I started the blog Small Pond Science and the Science for Everyone newsletter, reaching thousands of scientists on a weekly basis.
