Bill serves as a technical resource for the Office of the Secretary and supports the Assistant Secretary for Water and Science in her role as chair of the DOI Senior Science Advisors Council, which is charged with coordinating the science capabilities of the Department.

As the Department’s Senior Science Advisor, he will advise and consult with senior leaders and officials throughout DOI to build awareness of how the USGS can support its mission and ensure that the scientific activities the USGS is conducting on behalf of DOI and its bureaus and offices are of the highest relevance and value to the Department’s mission. He works closely with the USGS Chief Scientist and mission area associate directors to ensure that DOI needs are incorporated into USGS science planning. He works with the Deputy Director for Operations and regional directors to connect USGS science with DOI needs on the landscape. He also provides department-level representation on interagency coordination groups.
