William Werkheiser

Mr. William (Bill) Werkheiser is the Associate Director for Water Resources Mission Area at the United States Geological Survey (USGS).  Mr. Werkheiser provides leadership in working with partners to monitor, asses, conduct targeted research, and deliver information on wide range of water resources and conditions including streamflow, groundwater, water quality, and water use and availability. 

Mr. Werkheiser previously served as the Department of the Interior’s (DOI) Senior Science Advisor and Scientific Integrity Officer. Before moving to DOI in 2019, he served as the USGS Deputy Director, including more than a year exercising the delegated authority of the Director from 2017 to 2018. Having risen through the ranks and leading at both the science center and regional levels, and serving the Department, Mr. Werkheiser brings a broad perspective and a demonstrated commitment to collaboration across the bureau and with our wide array of partners. Mr. Werkheiser is currently focused on developing actionable tools for drought response. His service to the USGS and the federal government was recognized with a Presidential Rank Award as a Distinguished Executive in 2016. 

Mr. Werkheiser received his Master of Science from the University of Massachusetts in 1986 and earned his Bachelor of Science from Bloomsburg University in 1979.
