Clear weather allowed HVO scientists to make additional observations of the water at the bottom of Halema‘uma‘u today, including laser range finder measurements (shown here), thermal images, and telephoto photographs. While doing their work, they heard and saw multiple rockfalls from the crater rim, a reminder of the ongoing hazards in this area and why it is closed to the public. USGS photo by J. Observations through a telephoto lens revealed a third "pond" of water that emerged, or became more obvious, over the past day. This much smaller puddle of water is faintly visible between the two greenish ponds shown here and noted in HVO's photos posted yesterday (Aug. 3). USGS photo by J. Babb, 08/04/2019.
