Coastal Experts Evaluate Management Options for Mississippi/Alabama Coastline
NCCOS-funded researchers have published a study assessing strategies to reduce future coastal hazards in Mississippi and Alabama. A panel of U.S. Geological Survey experts found that adding sand to beaches and dunes could help limit erosion and storm damage, while unmanaged marshes may shrink under rising seas, increasing flood risks. The panel agreed that flooding during extreme storms will likely worsen as sea levels rise, regardless of restoration efforts.
