GLSC’s DeBruyne and Ireland Lead Training in Larval Fish Sampling and Identification to Support Cooperative Science at Lake Erie
Teaching Larval Fish Identification
Robin DeBruyne and Stacey Ireland (GLSC, Ann Arbor, MI) traveled to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (OMNRF) Field Office in Wheatley, Ontario, to provide a training workshop on fish early-life-history sampling and identification during March 25-26, 2024. Nine OMNRF biologists and technicians reviewed all procedures in a classroom setting, observed demonstrations of larval fish collection procedures on the OMNRF vessel, and practiced sample processing and larval identifications in the laboratory. This training aids in standardizing field methods between agencies conducting larval assessments during the 2024 Lake Erie Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative for future analysis.
