In 1977, the Congress of the United States recognized the need for uniform, current, and reliable information on water use and directed the U.S. Geological Survey to establish a National Water-Use Information Program (NWUIP) to complement the Survey's data on the availability and quality of the Nations water resources. Since 1985 site-specific water-use data for several categories have been collected and compiled annually by the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission (ANRC) in cooperation with the USGS. Data for the irrigation and livestock ( animal specialties ) categories are reported through the Conservation District Offices in each county. Site-specific water-use data for public supply, commercial, industrial, mining, power generation, irrigation and livestock ( stock and animal specialties ) are stored in the USGS Arkansas Water Science Center's Water-Use Data Base System (WUDBS). Water-use data for domestic (self-supplied) and livestock (stock) are not required to report to ANRC. In some categories it is necessary to supplement these data from other sources. These sources include public agencies, industries, public utilities, other organizations, and individuals.

Water Use in Arkansas, 2005
The water-use program in Arkansas is a cooperative effort between the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission and the U.S. Geological Survey to inventory water use. During 2005, the amount of water withdrawn from ground- and surface-water sources in Arkansas was estimated to be 11,455 million gallons per day (Mgal/d). Of this amount, about 7,510 Mgal/d (66 percent) was from ground-water and about 3,Water use in Arkansas, 1995
As part of the National Water-Use Information Program, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) stores water-use data in standardized format for different categories of water use. These data are aggregated by county, 4- and 8-digit hydrologic units, and aquifer in the Aggregated Water-Use Data System (AWUDS). The water-use program in Arkansas is a cooperative effort between Arkansas Soil and Water Conservation Commission and the U.S. Geological Survey. During 2000, the amount of water withdrawn from ground- and surface-water sources in Arkansas was estimated to be 10,963 million gallons per day (Mgalld). Of this amount, about 6,952 Mgal/d (63 percent) were from ground water and about 4,011 Mgalld (37 pWater use in Arkansas, 1981
Water use and consumption data for 1981 are presented by county and source. Use-data are presented by category for each county. Total water use, excluding wildlife impoundments, was 32,970 million gallons per day, which was 19 percent less than in 1980; consumption was 4,610 million gallons per day. Ground water use was 4,270 million gallons per day, and suface-water use was 2 ,870 million gallons - Partners
