Catherine (Cathy) Chamberlin
Catherine (Cathy) Chamberlin, Physical Scientist, Statistical and Geospatial Section, Massachusetts Office

Cathy grew up in Massachusetts about a mile away from the Merrimack River. She received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Yale University in 2012, and a Ph.D. in ecology from Duke University in 2020. She has worked in a variety of laboratory settings, but shifted heavily into data analytics during her Ph.D., when she studied the high-frequency temporal patterns of nitrate concentrations in rivers (including the 100+ stations monitored for high-frequency nitrate by the USGS). She recently completed an ORISE post-doc with the EPA developing a decision-support tool to identify least-cost management plans for reducing nutrient concentrations flowing out of large watersheds. She is excited to be joining the USGS as a physical scientist with the Statistical and Geospatial Section. Cathy enjoys gardening, hiking, and most anything else outdoors.

Amelia Lewis
Amelia Lewis, Hydrologic Technician, New Hampshire/Vermont Field Office

Amelia grew up in New Haven, Connecticut. In 2021, she received her bachelor’s degree in geology and environmental studies from Oberlin College in Ohio. During college, she completed several research and study programs that took her all over the world, including studying water quality in Tübingen, Germany and attending a program focused on mountain ecology and environmental policy in Bhutan. After graduating, she worked on a project focused on atmospheric interactions of white pine trees at the University of Michigan Biological Station and served with AmeriCorps in Oregon/Washington and Arizona in National Parks. In June 2022, she was welcomed to the New England Science Center and is so excited to learn all she can about water science! In her free time, she enjoys outdoor activities, aerial arts, cooking, and exploring new places.

Jake Malcom
Jake Malcom, Hydrologic Technician, Maine Field Office

Jake was born and raised in Maine before attending Wheaton College, MA where he received his bachelor’s degree in environmental science. Throughout high school and college, he explored his passion for the outdoors by traveling and working in several different locations in the United States.  During the summer of 2019, Jake took an AmeriCorps trail crew position in Colorado, which solidified his desire to help protect our wild spaces.  He is excited to join the New England Water Science Center to contribute to the protection of the places he has grown to love.  In his free time, Jake enjoys alpine skiing, ultimate frisbee, and sailing.
Julianna Reynolds
Julianna Reynolds, Hydrologic Technician, Massachusetts Field Office

Julianna grew up in Columbus, Ohio and received her Bachelor of Science in environmental science, with a concentration in water science, from Ohio State University in 2021. During the months of lockdown in 2020, she served a five-month AmeriCorps term with the Forest Service in North Central Idaho completing stream habitat surveys for fish spawning, while also taking the time to explore the Pacific Northwest. After graduating, Julianna moved to Massachusetts to be closer to relatives and accepted a Hydrologic Technician position at the New England Water Science Center. She loves anything outdoors, including hiking, camping, and checking more National Parks off her list. She looks forward to starting a career with the USGS.
Sean Thiboldeaux
Sean Thiboldeaux, Hydrologic Technician, Maine Field Office

Sean grew up in Madison, Wisconsin and earned a Bachelor of Science in biological systems engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 2020, focusing his studies on soil and water resources. Prior to joining the New England Water Science Center in Maine, he worked in outdoor environmental education, water quality research labs, and the private civil engineering industry as a stormwater engineer. Sean’s scientific and academic interests include water resource engineering, agriculture, ecological studies, environmental science, philosophy, and sociology.
In his free time, he enjoys outdoor activities of all seasonal varieties. Some of Sean’s favorites include running, biking, ultimate frisbee, skiing, and ice skating. This is his first time living outside of the Midwest, and he is very eager to explore all the beautiful natural areas and sights that Maine and New England have to offer!
