The USGS Indiana Water Science Center, in cooperation with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, have developed a quality assured volunteer groundwater data collection system to enhance the existing groundwater-level network for the state and provide usable data to the public. Individuals interested in providing data to the Indiana Volunteer groundwater monitoring network can find more information on how to join the network by contacting the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Water. Participating entities are Indiana Water Monitoring Council (IWMC) Groundwater Focus Committee, and Indiana Farm Bureau.
Background
In 2001, the US Geological Survey (USGS) Indiana Water Science Center and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), operated and measured (intermittently or continuously) 88 wells throughout the state. In 2015, that count dropped to 37 wells throughout the state.
Network establishment
- Call for more groundwater monitoring in Indiana Chamber 2014 water plan to reestablish network
- Need for archival and availability of data collected from other state agencies
Site Criteria
- Wells with background water levels that are not directly affected by production
- Prospect wells or wells in abandoned well fields
- Wells that have long term potential
- Will not be removed or have potential for being heavily impacted by production
- Sites with equipment already installed
- Utilities or consultants with transducers
Data record collection and approval
- Data collected by volunteers
- Calibrated E-tapes provided by Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR)
- Data worked and approved by USGS
- Field checks and peer data review by USGS Indiana personnel
- Public availability
- Data available via Groundwater Watch site
