Chinook salmon spawn in the Middle Santiam River
The Middle Santiam River is a tributary of the South Santiam River in the Willamette River basin.
In summer 2023, USGS scientists documented spring Chinook Salmon spawning in the remote Middle Santiam River above Green Peter Reservoir. This is among some of the first observations of spawning in the Middle Santiam River since the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers re-introduced spring Chinook Salmon in 2022. Spring Chinook Salmon are listed as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Learn more about other observations.
