As part of TriMet’s Public Art Program for the MAX Orange Line, Tilikum Light: An Illuminating Conversation between a River and a Bridge, artists Anna Valentina Murch and Doug Hollis incorporated U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) water data into a one-of-a-kind lighting installation on Portland’s Tilikum Crossing, Bridge of the People. Tilikum Light turns real-time water data from the Willamette River into a dynamic lighting display.
The USGS streamgage near the Morrison Bridge (14211702) continuously measures the river’s temperature, height, flow speed and many other water-quality values. Some of this information is sent to a custom software system developed by artist-technologist Morgan Barnard, which translates the river’s changing conditions into movements of color and light across the bridge.
The lighting system includes 178 LED lights installed along 40 bridge cables, four towers, and the Sonic Dish sculpture along the Eastside Esplanade. Here's how the river’s data shapes the display:

Water-quality parameters have been collected at the USGS Willamette at Morrison (14211702) streamgage since 2009 and are primarily supported by appropriated funds from Congress. Continued collection of this long-term water-quality record depends upon availability of funding and program priorities. Users of this data are encouraged to stay informed about its availability and share how they use it to support scientific or management decisions.
