Telemetry via satellites for raptor studies Telemetry via satellites for raptor studies
Monitoring animal movements by satellite was first ac complished in 1970 with an elk in Wyoming. The large size of early transmitter packages restricted their use to very large animals. Miniaturization of electronic components in the 1980s allowed application of satellite telemetry to large birds. Satellite transmitters have been tested with mixed results on geese, swans, petrels...

Effects of acidification on metal accumulation by aquatic plants and invertebrates. 1. Constructed wetlands Effects of acidification on metal accumulation by aquatic plants and invertebrates. 1. Constructed wetlands
Compared were concentrations of Al, Cd, Ca, Cu, Fe, Hg, Pb, Mg, Mn, Ni, P, and Zn in water, plants, and aquatic insects of three acidified (pH ∼ 5.0) and three nonacidified (pH ˜ 6.5) constructed wetlands. Concentrations of Zn in water and bur-reed (Sparganium americanum) were higher in acidified wetlands than in nonacidified wetlands. Floating nonrooted plants contained mean...

Satellite telemetry options for avian research Satellite telemetry options for avian research
Four manufacturers now produce transmitters in the size range suitable for raptors (3-5% of body mass). Dummies of these transmitters will be displayed and harnessing techniques will be demonstrated. Estimates will be given for: cost, reliability, longevity, mass, availability, programmability, power output and other information essential in deciding on manufacturer and model.

Eggs, nests, and nesting behavior of akiapolaau (Drepanidinae) Eggs, nests, and nesting behavior of akiapolaau (Drepanidinae)
We describe the fifth verified nest and first verified egg of the Akiapolaau (Hemignathus munroi), an endangered Hawaiian honeycreeper. We dispute the validity of Bryan?s (1905a) description of three eggs and two nests of the Akiapolaau. Eggs that he attributed to this species were much smaller than ours, and his nest descriptions did not match the only nest apparently belonging to the...

Habitat suitability index model for brook trout in streams of the Southern Blue Ridge Province: Surrogate variables, model evaluation, and suggested improvements Habitat suitability index model for brook trout in streams of the Southern Blue Ridge Province: Surrogate variables, model evaluation, and suggested improvements
Data from several sources were collated and analyzed by correlation, regression, and principal components analysis to define surrrogate variables for use in the brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) habitat suitability index (HSI) model, and to evaluate the applicability of the model for assessing habitat in high elevation streams of the southern Blue Ridge Province (SBRP). In all data...

Trail inventory and assessment approaches to trail system planning at Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area Trail inventory and assessment approaches to trail system planning at Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area
Trail system planning and management require accurate assessments of existing trail resources and their condition. A standardized and efficient process for surveying, inventorying, and assessing trail systems was developed and applied in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Two approaches employed were (1) a Trail System Inventory, and (2) Prescriptive Work Logs. These...

Overview of national bird population monitoring programs and databases Overview of national bird population monitoring programs and databases
A number of programs have been set up to monitor populations of nongame migratory birds. We review these programs and their purposes and provide information on obtaining data or results from these programs. In addition, we review recommendations for improving these programs.

Survival rate estimation in the presence of tag loss using joint analysis of capture-recapture and resighting data Survival rate estimation in the presence of tag loss using joint analysis of capture-recapture and resighting data
Studies using resightings of marked birds typically make use of readily-observable tags that are not retained as well as metal legbands. We review methods for estimating survival rate with open capture-recapture / resighting models when tag loss is not negligible. All methods rely on data from double-banding studies, usually carried out as part of the resighting study by application of...

Population trends and management opportunities for neotropical migrants Population trends and management opportunities for neotropical migrants
The Breeding Bird Survey shows that certain Neotropical migrant songbird populations have been declining over the past 26 years. Among them are forest birds that require extensive forest on the breeding grounds and also forested habitats on tropical wintering grounds. Other species have shown significant declines only since the early 1980's. Birds with broader habitat tolerance, such as...

Forest to agriculture conversion in southern Belize: Implications for migrant land birds Forest to agriculture conversion in southern Belize: Implications for migrant land birds
Central America offers a suite of neotropical habitats vital to overwintering migrant land birds. The recent decline of many forest dwelling avian migrants is believed to be related in part to neotropical deforestation and land use change. However, spatio-temporal trends in neotropical habitat availability and avian migrant habitat use are largely unknown. Such information is needed to...

Critical review of the current knowledge of the biology of the American woodcock and its management on the breeding grounds Critical review of the current knowledge of the biology of the American woodcock and its management on the breeding grounds
We critiqued previous work on the biology and management of the American woodcock (Scolopax minor) on the breeding grounds. We determined that little is known about habitat variables and weather extremes that may limit the population. Most investigators who attempted to define habitat requirements of the woodcock used inadequate sample sizes, limited the duration of their studies, did...
