The relationship between annual survival rate and migration distance in mallards: An examination of the time-allocation hypothesis for the evolution of migration The relationship between annual survival rate and migration distance in mallards: An examination of the time-allocation hypothesis for the evolution of migration
Predictions of the time-allocation hypothesis were tested with several a posteriori analyses of banding data for the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos). The time-allocation hypothesis states that the critical difference between resident and migrant birds is their allocation of time to reproduction on the breeding grounds and survival on the nonbreeding grounds. Residents have higher...

Body condition, food habits, and molt status of late-wintering ruddy ducks in California Body condition, food habits, and molt status of late-wintering ruddy ducks in California
We studied body condition, food habits, and molt status of late-wintering ruddy ducks (Oxyura jamaicensis) using drainwater evaporation ponds in the southern San Joaquin Valley, California. Levels of body fat and protein were similar by sex but varied by age (adults greater than immatures). Masses of breast and leg muscle protein were greatest in adult males and lowest in immature males...

Eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus and culiseta melanura activity at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, 1985-90 Eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus and culiseta melanura activity at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, 1985-90
Mosquito population densities, virus isolations and seroconversion in sentinel quail were used to monitor eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus activity at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center.

Range use and movements of California condors Range use and movements of California condors
Between 1982 and 1987, photographic and telemetric tracking of California Condors (Gymnogyps californianus) yielded information on use of the last known range of the species by 23 individual birds. Except for yearlings, most and possibly all individuals in the population used all major foraging zones. Use of the foraging zones was not uniform among individuals, however. Breeding pairs...

Establishing paternity in Whooping Cranes (Grus americana) by DNA analysis Establishing paternity in Whooping Cranes (Grus americana) by DNA analysis
DNA fingerprinting was used to study paternity and genetic variability within a captive flock of Whooping Cranes (Grus americana). Fingerprint patterns for 42 individuals were obtained by digesting genomic crane DNAs with HaeIII followed by electrophoresis, blotting, and hybridization to the M13 minisatellite probe. Despite finding reduced levels of genetic variation in the Whooping...

Group foraging by a stream minnow: shoals or aggregations? Group foraging by a stream minnow: shoals or aggregations?
The importance of social attraction in the formation of foraging groups was examined for a stream-dwelling cyprinid, the rosyside dace, Clinostomus funduloides. Dace arrivals and departures at natural foraging sites were monitored and tested for (1) tendency of dace to travel in groups, and (2) dependency of arrival and departure rates on group size. Dace usually entered and departed...

Fifty-fifth Christmas Bird Count. 159. Ocean City, Md Fifty-fifth Christmas Bird Count. 159. Ocean City, Md
The distribution of dynamic pressure behind a Harris' hawk's wing was sampled using a wake rake consisting of 15 pitot tubes and one static tube. The hawk was holding on to a perch, but at an air speed and gliding angle at which it was capable of gliding. The perch was instrumented, so that the lift developed by the wing was known and the lift coefficient could be calculated. The mean of...

Trends and management of wolf-livestock conflicts in Minnesota Trends and management of wolf-livestock conflicts in Minnesota
The nature and extent of wolf-livestock conflicts in Minnesota during 1975-86 was studied as part of a wolf depredation control program. The level of wolf (Canis lupus) depredation on livestock in Minnesota, as determined from the total number of complaints verified annually during 1975-86, showed a slight upward trend but did not increase significantly. A significant portion of the...
