Habitat selection and management of the Hawaiian crow Habitat selection and management of the Hawaiian crow
The abundance and range of the Hawaiian crow, or alala, (Corvus hawaiiensis) have decreased drastically since the 1890's. Fewer than 10 breeding pairs remained in the wild in 1985. A sample of 82 nests during 1970-82 were used to determine habitat associations. Two hundred firty-nine alala observations were used to estimate densities occurring in different vegetation types in 1978...

The Husting dilemma: A methodological note The Husting dilemma: A methodological note
Recently, Gill (1985) discussed the interpretation of capture history data resulting from his own studies on the red-spotted newt, Notophthalmus viridescens , and work by Husting (1965) on spotted salamanders, Ambystoma maculatum. Gill (1985) noted that gaps in capture histories (years in which individuals were not captured, preceded and followed by years in which they were) could result...

Mourning dove nesting: Seasonal patterns and effects of September hunting Mourning dove nesting: Seasonal patterns and effects of September hunting
A nationwide State-Federal cooperative study was initiated in 1978 to examine effects of September hunting on nesting mourning doves (Zenaida macroura). This study was designed to (1) determine the proportion of the annual total of dove nesting activity and production that occurs in September and October, and (2) determine if survival rates of mourning dove eggs and nestlings are lower...

A field comparison of nested grid and trapping web density estimators A field comparison of nested grid and trapping web density estimators
The usefulness of capture-recapture estimators in any field study will depend largely on underlying model assumptions and on how closely these assumptions approximate the actual field situation. Evaluation of estimator performance under real-world field conditions is often a difficult matter, although several approaches are possible. Perhaps the best approach involves use of the...

Behavior of mallard ducklings from adults exposed to selenium Behavior of mallard ducklings from adults exposed to selenium
Pairs of adult mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) were fed a control diet or a diet containing 1, 2, 4 or 8 ppm selenium in the form of seleno-DL-methionine. Ducklings from these pairs were fed an untreated diet from hatching through 6 d of age, at which time their avoidance of a fright stimulus was tested. Selenium had no effect on the ducklings' response to the fright stimulus.

Antibody response of sandhill and whooping cranes to an eastern equine encephalitis virus vaccine Antibody response of sandhill and whooping cranes to an eastern equine encephalitis virus vaccine
As a possible strategy to protect whooping cranes (Grus americana) from fatal eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) viral infection, studies were conducted to determine the immune response of this species and sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) to a formalin-inactivated EEE viral vaccine. Viral-specific neutralizing antibody was elicited in both species after intramuscular (IM) vaccination...

Survival of spotted salamander eggs in temporary woodland ponds of coastal Maryland Survival of spotted salamander eggs in temporary woodland ponds of coastal Maryland
Temporary ponds on the Atlantic Coastal Plain in maryland were characterized according to water chemistry, rain input, phytoplankton, zooplankton and use by the spotted salamander Ambystoma maculatum during March-October 1983-1984. Neither the number of egg masses per unit of pond surface (abundance) nor the survival of spotted salamander embryos was significantly correlated (P>0.05)...

A survey of Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd, Cr, As, and Se in earthworms and soil from diverse sites A survey of Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd, Cr, As, and Se in earthworms and soil from diverse sites
Earthworms and soils were collected from 20 diverse sites in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, and were analyzed for Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd, Cr, As, and Se. Correlation coefficients relating concentrations of the elements in earthworms to concentrations in soil were low (−0.20

Comparison of neotropical winter bird populations in isolated patches versus extensive forest Comparison of neotropical winter bird populations in isolated patches versus extensive forest
Wintering birds were captured with mist nets at 12 pairs of forested sites in the New World tropics in 1984 and 1985 to compare populations in small isolated woodlands (generally 5-50 ha) with those in extensive forests (> 1,000 ha). Net-hours of effort were similar in large and small sites, as were total birds captured and banded, but species composition was very different. Members of...
