Occurrence and timing of second clutches in common terns Occurrence and timing of second clutches in common terns
Eighteen pairs of Common Terns (Sterna hirundo) at three different colonies laid second clutches while still feeding young from their first broods. Seven clutches were laid before the chicks from the first brood fledged, and 11 were laid after the chicks from the first brood fledged. In each case, parents alternately fed chicks from the first brood and incubated the second clutch...

Residues of organochlorine insecticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, and heavy metals in biota from Apalachicola River, Florida, 1978 Residues of organochlorine insecticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, and heavy metals in biota from Apalachicola River, Florida, 1978
Seventy-seven composite samples composed of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), channel catfish (Ictaluras punctatus), threadfin shad (Dorosoma petenense), Asiatic clam (Corbicula fluminea), burrowing mayfly (Hexagenia sp.), water snake (Natrix spp.), and little green heron (Butorides virescens) were collected from upper and lower reaches of the Apalachicola River, Florida, in 1978...

Comparative toxicity of acephate in laboratory mice, white-footed mice, and meadow voles Comparative toxicity of acephate in laboratory mice, white-footed mice, and meadow voles
The LD50 (95% confidence limits) of the organophosphorus insecticide acephate was estimated to be 351, 380, and 321 mg/kg (295–416, 280–516, and 266–388 mg/kg) for CD-1 laboratory mice (Mus musculus), white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus noveboracensis), and meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus), respectively. In a second study, these species were provided mash containing 0, 25, 100...

Radio-triggered anesthetic-dart collar for recapturing large mammals Radio-triggered anesthetic-dart collar for recapturing large mammals
A re-usable, radio-triggered, anesthetic-dart collar costing about $1,200 has been developed for recapturing large, free-ranging mammals. The collar was tested successfully on captive gray wolves, white-tailed deer, a mountain lion, a black bear, and a tiger, and on wild wolves, a bear, and deer after periods of up to 32 days. The main advantage of the capture collar is that it allows...

Recuperation of a severely debilitated wolf Recuperation of a severely debilitated wolf
Opportunities are rare for determining the degree to which an animal can starve and still survive. Therefore we describe here an incident in which a wild wolf (Canis lupus) starved almost to death and was then restored to her former free-ranging state. The incident took place in northern Lake County, Minnesota

Age-specific productivity and nest site characteristics of Cooper's hawks (Accipiter cooperii) Age-specific productivity and nest site characteristics of Cooper's hawks (Accipiter cooperii)
Nesting Cooper's Hawks (Accipiter cooperii) were studied in northeastern Oregon. Second-year (SY) males did not breed, but 22 percent of the breeding females were SY's. Mean clutch size (P = 0.012) and mean number of young fledged per pair that laid eggs (P 0.10) were lower for SY females than for adult (after second year [ASY}) females; however, an equal percentage of the eggs...

Home-range formation and dispersal of deer in northeastern Minnesota Home-range formation and dispersal of deer in northeastern Minnesota
Eleven white-tailed (Odocoileus virginianus) does and their offspring (10 male and 6 female fawns) were radio-tracked for up to 56 months (2,725 total deer locations) in Minnesota's Superior National Forest from November 1974 through August 1983. All fawns wintered in yards with their does and migrated in spring to their does' summer ranges where they then separated from the does. By 17...
