Microbial Inactivation and Nutrient Removal During Storage Phase of Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR)

Dr. John Lisle gave two oral presentations for the national AGWT conference: “Pathogen Inactivation Rates During Storage of Recharged Water in the Upper Floridan Aquifer” and “Progress on Research into Nutrient Reduction by Microbial Communities During ASR”

Dr. John Lisle presented two talks at the 2019 Annual American Groundwater Trust Conference: Managing Florida’s Aquifer in Orlando, Florida, on his research efforts to characterize the mechanisms and rates of bacterial and viral inactivation; and phosphorus, nitrogen, and carbon removal from recharged water during storage in the Upper Floridan Aquifer (UFA) at an ASR facility. He presented data that show the geochemical conditions in the UFA enhance the inactivation of bacteria and viruses; and that the native aquifer planktonic and biofilm microbial communities effectively remove phosphorus, nitrate, and carbon during storage periods as short as one month. A manuscript has been submitted to Frontiers in Microbiology.
