Monitoring High-Priority Stream Crossings Along Proposed Natural Gas Pipeline Routes
Roanoke River Basin
Near Proposed Natural Gas Pipeline Routes
Cowpasture River Monitoring Site
Looking Downstream
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), is monitoring the water quality of multiple high-priority streams where natural gas pipeline crossings have been proposed. The purpose of the monitoring effort is to collect baseline water-quality data and, if the pipeline construction is approved, to monitor water quality in these streams before, during, and after pipeline construction.
Study Objectives:
- Install, operate, and maintain a network of water-quality monitors that continuously measure water level, water temperature, pH, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity at proposed pipeline crossings of selected high-priority streams in accordance with published USGS standards and protocols.
- Monitor potential changes in water temperature, pH, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity during and after construction of the proposed pipeline crossings of selected high-priority streams.
- Make the data publicly available in near real-time via USGS Water Date for the Nation (WDFN).
