New NASA ROSES Award for 5-years (2023-2028) for the Global Food-and-Water Security-support Analysis Data (GFSAD) project of WGSC (PI: Prasad S. Thenkabail).

Dr. Prasad S. Thenkabail (PI) of the Western Geographic Science Center (WGSC) of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and his team won the very competitive National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) ROSES 2022 Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments  (NNH22ZDA001N-MEASURES) 5-year grant award for the proposal entitled: “Global Food Security-support Analysis Data (GFSAD) Products for an Evergreen Revolution in the Twenty-first Century: through High-resolution (30m or better) Multiple Satellite Sensor Data, Machine Learning Algorithms, and Big-data Analytics on the Cloud”.  Dr. Thenkabail is PI and Dr. Trent Biggs of the San Diego State University (SDSU) is co-I. Other key important members of the team are: Dr. Pardhasaradhi Teluguntla of Bay Area Environmental Research Institute (BAERI) @ USGS, Mr. Adam Oliphant of WGSC, Dr. Itiya Aneece of WGSC, Dr. Daniel Foley of WGSC, and Mr. Richard McCormick of Northern Arizona University (NAU) @ WGSC. The proposal has many National and International collaborators from institutes such as the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Centers spread across the world. The total award is about 2.7 million dollars over 5 years. The overarching goal of this NASA MEaSUREs project to develop a comprehensive GFSAD project that will produce multiple cropland models, maps, and monitoring tools leading to a wide array of products using machine learning algorithms (MLAs), and satellite sensor big-data analytics through cloud-computing. Specific focus in this GFSAD project, is to focus on producing four distinct Landsat-derived 30m global cropland products for the years 2020 and 2025:

  1. Global Cropland Extent Product @ 30m (LGCEP30-2020, LGCEP30-2025).
  2. Global Rainfed and Irrigated Product @ 30m (LGRIP30-2020, LGRIP30-2025).
  3. Global Cropping Intensity Product @ 30m (LGCIP30-2020 & LGRIP30-2025) &
  4. Global Crop Type Product @ 30m for USA, Canada, and India (LGCTY30-2020USACAN, LGCTY30-2025USACAN; LGCTY30-2020India, LGCTY30-2025India).

The award announcement was made by through an official letter from Dr. Jack A. Kaye, Associate Director of Research, Earth Science Division, NASA.
