Aquaculture water-use withdrawal estimates for 2013, 2018, and 2023 by state and year for the United States, excluding territories
This data release provides state-level estimates of aquaculture water-use withdrawals for the United States for the 2013, 2018, and 2023 Census of Aquaculture reference years. Estimates were developed by processing approved National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), U.S. Department of Agriculture data within the USDA NASS Data Lab enclave and aggregating outputs at the state level in accordance with USDA NASS disclosure rules. The estimation approach is based on Lovelace (2009) and updated using facility-level attributes (enclosure type, area, replacement rates, and production indicators) harmonized across census reference years. Results are reported in million gallons per day (Mgal/d) for total water use and, where available, by water type (groundwater or surface water). Significant-digits rules were applied to all published aggregates. These estimates can be used to assess aquaculture water demand spatially and temporally and to support USGS water-use analyses and planning.
