Asian swamp eel distribution data in Florida
August 31, 2026
Asian swamp eels (Percomorpha, Synbranchiformes, Synbranchidae, Monopterus) were discovered in Florida in the 1990s and considered established as early as 1997. We report initial detection in Central Florida of established populations of Monopterus javanensis Lacepède 1800, Sunda Swamp Eel, previously known from the greater Tampa and Miami areas, and Ophichthys cuchia (Hamilton, 1822), Cuchia, never recorded from Florida waters.
