Chemical Composition of Water in Lakes, Ponds, Rivers, and Creeks in Northwest Alaska
This dataset includes field and laboratory analyses of water samples collected from lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams in northwest Alaska within Cape Krusenstern National Monument, Noatak National Preserve, Kobuk Valley National Park, Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, and Bering Land Bridge National Preserve.
At sites across the five national park units, in situ water quality measurements were made and water samples were collected from lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams. Pore waters were collected from below the sediment-water interface from lakes and ponds. Field measurements included pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen concentration and percent saturation, specific conductance, oxidation-reduction potential, and turbidity. Water samples were processed (details provided in the metadata file) and analyzed for water isotopes, dissolved inorganic carbon concentration and isotopic composition, alkalinity, total organic carbon, nutrients (nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, total dissolved nitrogen and total dissolved phosphorus), inorganic anions, major cations, iron oxidation state, dissolved organic carbon concentration, isotopic composition, and optical properties (UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy), inorganic sulfide, dissolved methane, total mercury and methylmercury, and filter-passing and total recoverable elements (silicon (as silicon dioxide), aluminum, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, arsenic, selenium, yttrium, silver, cadmium, barium, lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, dysprosium, thallium, uranium, lead).
