Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Surveys in and near Lava Beds National Monument in Northern California, USA in 2022 and 2024

February 25, 2026

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) surveys were conducted in and around the Lava Beds National Monument in northern CA during two field expeditions, in June of 2022 and May of 2024. These surveys collected GPR data using various antenna frequencies and multiple survey styles in varied geologic terrains. Types of terrain surveyed include inside of- and over lava tubes, on volcanic deposits ranging from basaltic lava flows to pumice-obsidian flows, over void structures and faults, and over layered deposits of varying geologic origin. The survey types conducted include Common-Offset and two types of Multi-Offset surveys: Common Midpoint and Wide Angle Reflection and Refraction (WARR).
