Hydrus-1D simulations of vertical water and chloride fluxes in shallow soils near breccia pipe uranium mines, Mojave County, Arizona
A study was conducted of mixed-metal transport of dissolved versus solid phases in shallow soils at four semi-arid, breccia-pipe uranium mine sites in Mojave County, Arizona. As a part of that study, multi-decadal Hydrus-1D models (Šimůnek and others, 2009) were applied at each site to evaluate the potential for downward movement of water. A one-dimensional vertical profile of the shallow (< 2 m) unsaturated zone was modeled at each of the four study sites. Each model was located at the soil core with the greatest shallow U concentration at that study site. Simulated processes included chloride deposition, precipitation (e.g. rain and snow), evapotranspiration, and water and chloride fluxes in the soil. This data compilation includes a zipped file with a "readme.txt" text file with instructions and table of directory contents, input and output datasets, source code, executables, validation scripts, and a point shapefile of the profile locations.
