Mercury in emergent odonates and midges of the Prairie Pothole wetlands of North Dakota, USA

September 2, 2025

This data release is an extension of a previous data release (https://doi.org/10.5066/P971S7IV) that expands the collected data to include tissue mercury concentrations for adult aquatic insects emerging from wadable wetlands in cropland and grassland landscapes of the Prairie Pothole region (n = 15 wetlands in 2016). These data were collected at the same time as the other data (analyzed in 2016), but not released or analyzed in the previous manuscript and data release. Emergent odonate and diptera adults were collected with floating emergence traps or floating malaise traps, frozen, and analyzed for total mercury using standard methods. Samples were collected in late spring during the local bird breeding season. The wetlands in this study were on 3 USFWS Waterfowl Protection Areas and 2 private farms in Stutsman County, North Dakota, USA.
