Pathological findings in rainbow snakes (Farancia erytrogramma) associated with mortality events in Virginia, USA, 2020-2022

December 5, 2025

Snake fungal disease, which is caused by the fungal pathogen Ophidiomyces ophidiicola, is associated with severe skin infections and mortality in individual snakes. However, little has been described regarding how disease severity and impacts vary by snake populations and species. We describe mortality in rainbow snakes in Virginia, USA, linked to snake fungal disease. This data set includes information on the pathology of six individual rainbow snakes from the abovementioned mortality event.
