Qualitative data collected for a literature review related to indaziflam treatment outcomes on rangelands through August 2026
This data release includes citations, titles, and other data collected from studies related to the effects of indaziflam treatments on vegetation communities. As invasive annual grasses continue to expand across western North American rangelands, they influence fire activity, reduce native plant diversity, and modify wildlife habitat. Land managers are increasingly turning to indaziflam, a novel pre-emergent herbicide, to manage invasive annual grasses, yet its performance and efficacy across diverse plant communities has not been comprehensively studied. We conducted a systematic review of 36 field-based studies to evaluate how application strategies and pre-treatment conditions may influence treatment success, and what trade-offs may occur for native species. We began by identifying relevant scientific publications using keywords suggested by project partners (“indaziflam” OR “rejuvra” OR “alion” OR “specticle” OR “esplanad*”). We used several tools to search databases on 26–27 February 2025 for relevant literature, including journal articles, agency and non-governmental organization reports, data releases, theses, and dissertations. We used BiblioSearch to systematically search the abstract title and keywords in Scopus, and the full citation record for USGS Publications Warehouse and USGS ScienceBase. We searched the title, abstract, and indexing in All Databases in Web of Science, and we used Publish or Perish to search for keywords in the title of Google Scholar records. We repeated this search on 30 January 2026 and 20 August 2026 using the same tools and databases and identified additional sources published between February 2025 and August 2026. From these keyword searches, we found a total of 1467 sources. We reviewed each source for relevance and eligibility, and systematically eliminated sources that did not meet our criteria. For the 40 remaining sources, we collected information on study design, herbicide treatments, application timing, and target species. We noted whether studies reported quantitative or qualitative pre-treatment vegetation data (both native and invasive) and weather conditions before and after treatments. We also recorded treatment outcomes, including native and invasive vegetation response metrics, whether statistical details were reported, our interpretation of treatment effectiveness, as well as any non-target effects documented. This data release includes data collected for each source provided in a CSV file.
