The reproductive development of wild-caught Black Carp Mylopharyngodon piceus in North America related to size and age at maturation from 2015 through 2023
This study provides data on the reproductive biology and age of Black Carp (Mylopharyngodon piceus) from various rivers in the Mississippi River Basin. A total of 549 fish samples, collected opportunistically between 2015 and 2023, underwent macroscopic and histological staging to assess reproductive development. Specimens were captured by commercial fishermen and biologists and sent to the Columbia Environmental Research Center where they were dissected, and necessary samples were collected. Capture information and data on the weight, total length, and sex were recorded. Age data was collected based on annulus formation. Macroscopic evaluation and histological analysis of gonads were conducted to determine reproductive stage, status, and fecundity.
