Shapefiles of Digitized Backwater Extent Behind Willwood Dam on the Shoshone River, near Cody, Wyoming Derived from 2012, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022 National Agriculture Imagery Program Imagery
The Wyoming-Montana Water Science Center, in cooperation with the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality, digitized layers to determine the backwater extent behind Willwood Dam on the Shoshone River near Cody, Wyoming from 2012, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022 National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) imagery. Digitizing layers of water extents behind Willwood Dam through time allows for comparisons which increases understanding of sediment processes in the pool behind the dam. The main objective of this digitization was to assess if sediment accumulation or transport was occurring. All images were taken from the irrigation season when pool elevations behind the dam were relatively consistent. The backwater extents were further subdivided into active channel, incipient floodplain, and island. These polygons were used to calculate the pool areas. This data release includes the shapefiles used to digitize the backwater extent.
