Stable isotopic compositions of volatile organic compound reference materials USGS96-105 measured at the U.S. Geological Survey Reston Stable Isotope Laboratory (RSIL), 2024–2025

September 16, 2026

Ten volatile organic compound matrix reference materials (RMs) were analyzed for hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur stable isotopic compositions at the Reston Stable Isotope Laboratory (RSIL) of the U.S. Geological Survey from 2024-2025. The RMs are acetonitrile, benzaldehyde, bis(methylthio)methane, dimethylsulfide, ethyl 2-methylbutyrate, furfural, 2-methyl-1-butanol, 1-octen-3-ol, (1S)-(-)-β-pinene, and toluene. Data includes raw and normalized isotopic data. Samples were normalized using two-point normalization using international reference materials. This dataset represents the RSIL contribution to a larger inter‑laboratory calibration of the reference materials.

Data files provided here include the metadata as an .xml file, five individual data tables and a data dictionary as comma-separated value .csv files, and a Microsoft Excel .xlsx file with the compilation of data tables. Descriptions of each .csv file can be found in the associated metadata.
