The Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS 1) carried two sensor packages on the Return Beam Vidicon (RBV) and the Multispectral Scanner (MSS). The RBV was designed as the primary sensor; however, the MSS sensor proved more reliable. Upon launch the satellite was renamed Landsat 1.
